DECK: A DECK FOR
SITTING, WATCHING, CHATTING

For our second assignment, we were asked to design a 36 sqm timber deck that relates to our brick wall while referring to the Timber Queensland’s Technical Data Sheet on Commercial Timber Decks.

concept

I wanted to design a large area that would allow people to sit, watch and chat. Thus, I went for a more simple rectangular design with straight edges, except where the wall meets the deck. Beside the wall is a flight of stairs that would welcome the people into the deck.

reflection

Through this assignment, I gained a deeper understanding on the concept of timber framing, which is very different to the previous wall assignment. I also learned the characteristics of the different types of timbers and explore the principles of strength, span and spacing and how stumps, bearers, joists are used to support a timber deck. Since we were given a prescribed stress grade and timber size for this assignment, I tried to maximize the spans and cantilevers while choosing the most efficent bearer in order to produce an effective structural system.
