WALL: PLAYING
WITH BRICKWORK
For our first assignment, we were tasked to design a single skin, continuous 110mm wide brick wall, to be located in Fawkner Park, Melbourne, while exploring the art and craft of brickwork.
concept
When designing, I wanted to create a wall with an opening facing towards the playground so that children and parents can relax and chat while looking at their children playing in the playground. The wall features a large curve that continues into a straight wall. In that large curve, there is a 795W X 860H opening and brick patterning to allow light to come through during dawn.
reflection
This assignment introduced me to mass construction, and the factors that need to be considered when constructing a wall. I also learned the components of a brick wall, including how openings and lintels work, reinforced concrete footings, and the rules of thumb that we need to keep in mind when creating a stable, self-sustaining brick wall. Another major takeaway from this assignment was how to read and use professional drawing conventions, annotations and dimensions, which I personally think is applicable in my future studies.
