M4: FRAME
VS FIELD

In the fourth module, we were given a text from Italo Calvino's Hidden Cities. Using a combination of skills gained from the previous module, we were tasked to interpret and represent the city by remodeling the university's Old Quad, adding notations and creating perspective frames. As compared to the previous modules, M4 gave us more creative freedom in designing the city.

Readings

My understanding of the readings was that Olinda is a continuously growing city, but unlike other places where the cities would grow around the older city like tree trunks, the cities in Olinda blossoms from within each other. Therefore, I decided to base the design of my isometric, notations and perspectives on this idea of continuous growth.

The time and temporal threshold shows that with the progression of time, the city continues to expand. There are a number of atmospheres to represent the different moods in the different areas of the city. The transference notation are all pointing outside and upwards to represent the direction of growth. The gaze and glance notation allows interaction between the older and newer cities.

In the first perspective, I wanted to frame the newer side of Olinda. The choice of the garden as the background and skylights were all based on the readings. To emphasize the overall peaceful feel created by the skylights and gardens, the tranquility / yellow color wash was applied.

In contrast, the second perspective captures the older side of Olinda. It represents a sense of chaos as the older cities are being pushed and pressed towards the outside. This contributed to the choice of color wash applied. I made minor changes to improve the overall look and neatness of the second perspective.

reflection

Module 4 was the module that I struggled with the most, mainly because during the initial stage, I did not grasp the idea from the readings very well, and this affected the design of my isometric remodel. However, following my tutor's feedback, I revisited the text in order to gain a better and deeper understanding of my text. Afterwards, I was able to remodel my isometric, add notations and create perspective frames. Overall, this module taught me about the importance of perspective and notations as representational techniques.
