SEAT

In this last assignment, we were instructed to use the skills we have developed throughout the semester and design a seat using a combination of at least two materials.

concept

Inspired by typical benches usually seen in parks, I designed a simple bench on my deck that would allow people to sit and enjoy the view of the playground. The materials chosen were timber (35 x 45 tallowwood) and steel (8 x 50 flat steel bar). Given that the bench I designed features a lot of curves, the use of hot rolled flat steel bars were suitable because they could be bent into different shapes, and also welded together. Timber was used as cladding to match the overall aesthetic of the deck, and also to provide thermal comfort for the users.

reflection

This project taught me about the importance of detailing and what needs to be considered when connecting two different elements with vastly different properties - and also how the seat would be connected to the deck. A lot of research was done during the project in order to find out suitable connections and fixings. Because flat steel bars could be bent and welded, I was able to easily construct my seat. The steel structure then allowed me to place the timber cladding on top. Overall I am very happy with the final design outcome.
